The 2013 Real Rock Stars Shine at Gala.
Youth on Record hosts its first annual Real Rock Star Gala on September 26 at McNichols Event Center.
It is a rare and beautiful occasion when a vision comes to life and not only meets but exceed one’s expectations. Youth on Record’s first annual Real Rock Stars Awards Gala was one such occasion.
Thank you to all who attended and contributed to what can be considered Youth on Record’s most impressive event to date.
It’s unlikely that gala attendees will soon forget the faces of the 2013 Rock Stars Diana Bonfil, Aidan Boyer, Noelia Delgado, Cruz Chavez-Fernandez and Dante Hicks, who received awards for excellence in personal and community empowerment. The evening began with a red carpet tribute to the Real Rock Stars, who arrived in-style in limos and SUVs provided by UBER. The students looked and felt terrific on the Red Carpet, outfitted and styled by Anna Be, The Men’s Warehouse, DEB and Aleey Dubaniewicz, Chelsey Lassaline and Rita B Salon.
Guests were welcomed to the event with lively performances by DJ Ripm, Zay Rios, Asia Fajardo-Wright, Randy Runyan, Molina Speaks, Mike Wird and Bianca Mikahn.
VIP guests then made their way to the second floor where they were treated to h’orderves courtesy of El Camino Community Tavern, Rocktinis from Deep Eddy Vodka, and craft brews from Left Hand Brewery. Performances featuring Josh Trinidad, Sean Merrell and Thomas Murray set the tone for the pre-awards festivities as guests made their way to each wing of the room to view the featured textile art display at McNichols Event Center.
The night kicked into high gear on the third level where table hosts Altitude Digital, Canopy Advisory Group, Diligant Media, Drew Elder J. F Maddox Foundation, 7S Management and others enjoyed food from Serendipity Catering and desserts from Happy Cakes while feasting their eyes on the spectacular Youth on Record cake provided by Jene Alie of Anything But Vanilla. As attendees took their seats, performances by Molina Speaks, Babah Fly, Mike Wird, Cavem Moetavation and others set the stage for an unforgettable awards ceremony.
Masters of ceremony Suzi Q. Smith and Ken Arkind
reminded the crowd of 350 why they were in the room – to celebrate Denver’s youth and to come together to address Colorado’s education crisis as a community. Members of Denver Public Schools administration and
West Career Academy faculty were seated next to the students and their families in a show of support.
Youth on Record’s Executive Director, Jami Duffy, wove together the story of six Community Rock Star Recipients – Councilwoman Judy Montero, Denver Housing Authority, Tacito Design, Colorado Music Buzz Magazine, Chad Holtzinger of Shopworks Architecture and DaVita - who were the initial investors in and supporters of Youth on Record’s Youth Media Studio, which opens this fall.
At last, independent hip-hop artist Sage Francis took the stage and presented the Real Rock Star Awards, but not without first showing a few video shout outs from his musician friends Immortal Technique, Zion I, Slug from Atmosphere, The Fray, Chuck Morris of AEG Live and Brother Ali. The students were poised, gracious and earnest as they came to the stage and accepted their “gold record” awards.
The night came to a close with an after party hosted by
DJ A-L and The Knew as the 2013 Real Rocks Stars rode away with the memory of a night that neither they nor the audience will ever forget!
